Dear Dancer, You Are Not Behind

Perfectionism, Comparison & Why It’s Okay to Be Exactly Where You Are

There’s this moment we’ve all had—standing in a dance class or at a social, watching someone glide across the floor with effortless rhythm and grace. And suddenly, all you can think is:

“Why don’t I look like that?”

“Am I ever going to get there?”

“Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”

If that’s ever crossed your mind, this one’s for you.

We compare our Day 1 to someone’s Year 10

It’s easy to forget that many of the dancers we admire have been doing this since they were kids. Or they’re professionals. Or they’ve spent years (and years!) practicing, failing, and getting back up.

Meanwhile, we show up to class once or twice a week, after work, tired, juggling everything else life throws at us—and still expect ourselves to get it right instantly.

That’s not fair to you.

Perfectionism sneaks in quietly

It sounds like:

  • “I messed up that shine again.”

  • “My partner must think I’m bad.”

  • “Everyone else is getting it except me.”

But dance isn’t about getting everything perfect. It’s about growth, connection, and joy. It’s about that one moment in class where something clicks. Or that one song in a social where you lose yourself completely in the music. That’s the real win.

Your mistakes are not failures—they’re feedback

Messing up is not a sign you’re doing badly. It’s proof that you’re learning. That your brain is forming new connections. That you’re trying something new.

So next time you stumble or feel lost in class—breathe. Smile. Keep moving. Everyone’s been there.

You are not behind

Your journey is yours. It’s not meant to look like anyone else’s. Some days will feel amazing, and some days you’ll want to throw your shoes across the room. That’s okay.

You are not behind. You’re exactly where you need to be.

So here’s your permission slip:

  • Show up messy.

  • Celebrate the small wins.

  • Laugh at the fumbles.

  • Be patient with your progress.

  • And most importantly—don’t stop dancing.
